World of Ebonreach
Welcome to the World of Ebonreach. A dark Gothic supernatural City. Home to Vampires, Werewolves, Hunters, Mages, Fae, Humans... and Monsters!
Ebonreach: City of the Neverdawn
The sun has not risen over Ebonreach in centuries.
An unmoving moon hangs above its Gothic towers, while a bruised violet horizon promises a dawn that never arrives. Gas lamps burn along rain-dark streets. Music drifts from shuttered balconies. Beneath the cobblestones, something ancient moves through roots, tunnels, and forgotten chambers.
Humans, vampires, werewolves, mages, hunters, and Fae all call Ebonreach home. They trade in the same markets, walk the same fogbound streets, and obey very different laws.
Ebonreach is a sanctuary, a battleground, and a living threshold between worlds.
Here, every district keeps its own secrets.
Explore the City
The French Quarter
Wrought-iron balconies overlook narrow streets illuminated by amber lamps. Music plays long after respectable citizens have barred their doors, though the melodies do not always sound entirely human.
Vampiric salons operate behind velvet curtains. Blood-tithe houses disguise themselves as private clubs. Musicians lace performances with subtle enchantments, and invitation-only gatherings decide political disputes that may reshape the city before morning.
The French Quarter is beautiful, elegant, and predatory. Hospitality is abundant—provided visitors understand what accepting it may cost.
The Garden District
Moss-draped oaks shelter ancestral manors, walled courtyards, and estates protected by generations of magic.
Mage families maintain their legacies here. Wards shimmer across gates and cobblestones. The air tastes of incense, rain, and ozone. Behind stained-glass windows, runesmiths, alchemists, sigil-carvers, and ritualists preserve arts that predate the city itself.
The Garden District appears quiet, but its peace is carefully maintained. Every manor has its history. Every garden has something buried beneath it.
Bayou Lacroix
Beyond the paved streets lies a wetland of drowned chapels, ancient cypress trees, drifting lights, and black water that remembers every disturbance.
Fae courts and swamp spirits rule by customs older than mortal law. Bargains are binding, gifts are rarely free, and hospitality can become a lifetime obligation. Boats follow channels that change beneath the fog, while distant bells ring from structures swallowed by the marsh generations ago.
Travelers are advised to remain polite—and never follow lights that know their names.
Ashenveil Cemetery
Cracked marble tombs and leaning mausoleums spread beneath the shadow of St. Mitchell’s Cathedral.
The cemetery’s dead are rarely silent. Voices travel beneath sealed graves, ghost-lights wander between monuments, and the Mourning Bell sometimes rings without mortal hands. The Upper Rows, Mausoleum Quarter, Bone Garden, and Whispering Gates each carry their own dangers.
Ashenveil is more than a burial ground. It is one of the thinnest places between the living world and whatever waits beyond it.
The Vellum Exchange
The Vellum Exchange is Ebonreach’s supernatural marketplace: a sprawling district devoted to occult commerce, forbidden knowledge, and contracts that enforce themselves.
Merchants sell relics, bottled memories, enchanted instruments, protective sigils, rare ingredients, and secrets whose owners may still be searching for them. Covered mirrors watch passing customers. Compasses point toward dangerous opportunities. Loose pages sometimes negotiate their own prices.
Every agreement carries weight here.
Read before signing.
The Shadow Market
Beneath the respectable markets lies a second economy.
Smugglers, exiles, relic-divers, curse brokers, and unaligned creatures gather in smoke-filled passages beneath the city. Stolen memories are traded beside counterfeit wards. Hunters purchase forbidden weapons from the same beings those weapons were designed to kill.
The Shadow Market has few permanent entrances. Those who find one should remember the route home before making a purchase.
Velvethorn Grove
Nature has reclaimed the streets of this moonlit enclave.
Roots split old foundations. Vines swallow abandoned homes. Flowers open in response to whispered thoughts. Werewolf tribes and druidic circles maintain a fragile peace beneath trees that remember the city before its walls were built.
Paths shift when unobserved, and travelers may emerge hours—or years—later than expected.
The Ebonweald
North of the city stands an ironwood forest older than Ebonreach.
Sound behaves strangely beneath its branches. Whispers travel for miles, while screams vanish almost immediately. Roots rearrange trails. Fog moves against the wind. Those who enter often feel watched long before they see anything watching them.
The Ebonweald is not simply inhabited.
It is awake.
The Undervein
Far below Ebonreach lies a cavernous network of living tunnels, drowned sanctuaries, fungal archives, forgotten chambers, and rivers of unnatural black water.
The Undervein predates human settlement and may be the source of the supernatural convergence surrounding the city. Its passages react to emotion, blood, memory, and magic. Entire routes can disappear between visits.
Some believe an ancient entity sleeps beneath its deepest chambers.
Others believe the Undervein is the entity.
Beyond the Walls
The territories surrounding Ebonreach are no less dangerous:
- Frostvale Peaks: Icebound mountains where ancient spirits sleep beneath unmelting snow.
- Blackfire Crag: Obsidian cliffs, volcanic forges, ash valleys, and molten vents.
- Elderstone Ridge: A high plateau of observatories and old-world ruins overlooking forest and frost.
- The Drowned Warrens: Flooded ruins where submerged passages carry voices through the dark.
The Powers of Ebonreach
No single ruler controls Ebonreach. Power survives through an unstable balance among five great supernatural societies.
Vampires
Elegant, political, and relentlessly patient, the vampire clans dominate much of the city’s social hierarchy.
They operate through salons, blood pacts, patronage, ancient family agreements, and influence over mortal institutions. Some seek stability and controlled coexistence. Others regard the city as a kingdom awaiting the correct sovereign.
Vampires rarely need to raise their voices. Their agreements can outlive everyone who witnessed them.
Werewolves
The werewolf tribes are territorial guardians bound to wilderness, ancestry, and the spiritual memory of the land.
Different tribes claim forests, mountains, volcanic territories, and hidden paths surrounding Ebonreach. They protect natural thresholds and hunt creatures that slip through places where the boundary grows thin.
Their laws favor loyalty, action, and remembered obligation. A promise made before the pack is not easily broken.
Mages
Ebonreach’s mage covens study the forces woven through blood, stars, flame, shadow, roots, and written sigils.
Their scholars create wards, enchanted objects, ritual circles, and defensive structures throughout the city. Yet their rival philosophies prevent them from acting as a single power. Every magical crisis becomes an argument over who understands it—and who should control the solution.
Mage rivalries are old enough to have ruins of their own.
Hunters
Hunters are mortals armed with relic weapons, inherited rites, specialized knowledge, and the conviction that preparation can overcome supernatural power.
Some protect neighborhoods ignored by the greater factions. Others pursue uncompromising crusades against anything they consider unnatural. Hunter creeds frequently disagree about what deserves protection, containment, or destruction.
The most dangerous hunters know exactly how closely conviction can resemble obsession.
Fae
Beautiful, dangerous, and governed by ancient laws, the Fae shape forgotten corners of Ebonreach through glamour, dreams, bargains, and altered perception.
Their courts embody different aspects of power: radiance, dusk, echoes, thorns, and truths that mortal language cannot comfortably hold. A Fae promise is precise. A Fae gift is meaningful. A Fae omission may matter more than anything spoken aloud.
Never assume beauty implies kindness—or cruelty implies dishonesty.
Those Who Live Beneath the Neverdawn
Most residents of Ebonreach are not rulers, warriors, or legendary beings. They are people adapting to a city where the impossible has become ordinary.
Runesmiths carve protective marks into doors and weapons. Alchemists brew medicines beside substances best left unnamed. Scribes prepare contracts that can bind memory, magic, and intention. Relic-divers search submerged ruins. Lantern keepers maintain lights along haunted roads. Gravediggers listen before opening the earth.
Merchants sell enchanted cloth beside ordinary bread. Musicians hide spells inside melodies. Dockworkers unload cargo while pretending not to notice which crates breathe. Children learn which streets are safe, which bells signal danger, and why no one answers a familiar voice calling from an empty alley.
Life continues beneath the Neverdawn because it must.
Festivals fill the streets with masks and candlelight. Markets remain crowded. Taverns stay open. Neighbors exchange favors, rumors, and protective charms.
The people of Ebonreach do not wait for daylight.
They have learned to live without it.
Enter the Neverdawn
Ebonreach is a city of velvet politics, living forests, haunted stone, binding bargains, and ordinary people surviving beside ancient powers.
Every district keeps a secret.
Every faction wants control.
Every shadow remembers.
And somewhere beneath the city, something is still dreaming.
